In your haste, sparks fly

from the red shoe onto the blue shoe

and ice shards flick

from the blue shoe onto the red shoe.

There is smoke and steam

and without their fire and ice

the shoes are nothing at all.

You are barefoot with a long way to go.

The pathway turns from rocks to sand

to grass to gravel.

Then there is no path at all.

But there are trees

and you have wings, don’t forget.

You can find your way in the night

by throwing your voice

and listening for how long it takes

to hit something.
